How Can Gases Generated During Carbonization Be Utilized?
Biomass carbonization produces not only carbonized material but also a certain amount of gas. Some of these gases are flammable; direct emission would not only waste energy but also increase environmental pollution control pressures.
So, how can these gases be utilized? There are five main ways.

Gas Recirculation to Carbonization Furnaces
This is a relatively direct utilization method.
- As fuel: Combustible gases are collected and burned to provide heat for the carbonization furnace.
- Reducing external energy: It can reduce dependence on fuels such as coal and natural gas.
- Improving energy efficiency: The energy generated during the carbonization process can be returned to the production process.
Simply put, it means “reusing” the generated gas.
Application of Process Gases to Raw Material Drying
Many biomass raw materials have a high moisture content and need to be dried before carbonization.
- Drying sawdust: Reduces the moisture content of the sawdust.
- Drying rice husks, straw, etc.: Helps the materials reach more suitable carbonization conditions.
- Reducing drying energy consumption: Utilizing the heat generated by the combustion of carbonization gas for drying.
This connects the carbonization and drying processes, reducing energy waste.
Application of Process Gases to Hot Water and Steam Generation
If the factory requires hot water or steam, the carbonization gas can also play a role.
- Heating water: Utilizing the heat generated by combustion to heat the production water.
- Generating steam: Providing heat to production processes that require steam through heat exchange equipment.
- Waste heat utilization: Reducing the waste of heat generated by the carbonization system.
This method is more suitable for projects with continuous production and high heat energy requirements.
Use of Purified Carbonization Gases as Fuel
Carbonized gas may contain tar, dust, water vapor, and other components, so it cannot be used directly.
It typically requires:
- Cooling and cooling;
- Dust and impurity removal;
- Necessary purification treatment;
- Selecting appropriate combustion equipment based on the gas composition.
After treatment, it can be used as fuel depending on the actual situation. However, the specific treatment plan needs to be designed in conjunction with the type of raw material, the carbonization process, and the gas composition.
Establishment of a “Charcoal–Gas–Heat” Circular Utilization Model
From an environmental recycling perspective, the ideal approach is not to utilize the gas alone, but to utilize all the different byproducts generated during the carbonization process.
For example:
| Product | Common Applications |
|---|---|
| Carbonized Materials | Carbon products, fuels, industrial raw materials |
| Combustible Gases | Furnace heating, drying, and heat supply |
| Thermal Energy | Raw material drying, hot water, steam |
| By-products | Further processing or comprehensive utilization based on actual composition |
This forms a relatively complete energy cycle: biomass waste enters the carbonization system → carbonized products and combustible gases are produced → the gases are burned to generate heat → the heat is used again for production.
